+1 This is nice for Java5 servers (which there are still a few out there).
Of course this means that we should also not use other Java6 features like
String.isEmpty() and stuff.

What would the drawbacks be of putting the api/impl code in completely
separate modules? Seemingly this would solve the packaging problems
and the impl jar could simply shade the api jar.

I really like the possibility of creating user extensible metadata for
