That's because gnome-icon-theme moved those icons from hicolor to gnome
and the GDM greeter uses no GTK theme so it doesn't use gnome for that.

I am using KDE.
I think the problem is that g-v-m and g-p-m are started via
/usr/share/autostart. KDE simply starts every desktop file in there,

Thanks for your bug. What version of Ubuntu do you use? Can you run
"rhythmbox -d" and note on what song it crashes? Could you get a
backtrace (the bug-buddy dialog the send the bug upstream has it)?
