I am sorry I can't tell you more ionformations to help you to resolve
that bug because i solve it by erasing my ~/.gnome and ~/.gnome
directories. And stoping to use the option "save the changes" in
"system" then "sessions" so the bug is probably coming from it.

I can confirm this. In my case it does so when I try to add a printer,
the process hangs and completely eats up the CPU. Killing it doesn't
work as it restarts into taking 100% of CPU again until a system
restart. (haven't tried just restarting GNOME)

at startup of the HALD , i´m still not very familliar with linux so i had no

Yesterday I downloaded Dapper final release. I got exactly the same
problem - after each recoreding "capture" is disabled automatically and
I must reenable it manually. Horrible. Is there some fix for this?

I found out that in MPlayer the mixer can also be configured to use OSS
or ALSA, assign a mixer channer or enable a sofware mixer wich doens't
affect any channel.
Unfortunately I am not in the position to make any choices about what's
important in Ubuntu ;-)

I removed gdm from my default startup procedure, and started it by hand. Now
everything was fine.
This tells me that this issue is not an issue of gdm, but more an issue of how
my machine boots up and the state my machine is in at the time gdm is started.

The GNOME Applications, Places and System menu block/applet normally
lives in the top-left of the desktop.
If the screen resolution changes to 640x480 and then gets changed back
to 1024x768, the menu is no longer in the top-left:

In my case what I find annoying is that the default behavior reuses
firefox windows.
I typically have several copies of firefox running on different desktops
and when I click on a link in evolution it opens the link in god-knows-
which-window and i have to search through the desktops.
