user accounts to get HAL working. I also have this problem and I'm happy

Yes, I set to NEVER in the power management section/menu. On occasions
I will want the monitor to NEVER go blank (say when I am installing
updates, etc.) and then on other occasions when the computer is just say
running FOLDING-AT-HOME, I want it to go blank after 3 minutes of
inactivity.

A quick "tail -f" suggests nothing is written to either Xorg.*.log or

rhythmbox does play the sound track if you give it a theora ogg video,
so the "open with" menu item makes sense. From the nautilus point of
view a theora ogg video is detected as "video/x-theora+ogg" which is
correct, shared-mime-in
