The memory corruption issue might be correct. I just replaced a stick
of PC133 RAM with another, larger stick. I now have 2 x 256MB = 512MB.

Well, I don' t know if I feel embarrassed or relieved but I found out I
had a corrupt file at /etc/X11/xkb/symbols/pc .
I had been playing with other keymap / layouts and somehow overwrote
that one. I found out by comparing the files with a fresh Feisty

I still have a trouble with jumping to the beginning of a track but it's
no longer so obtrusive. Now it jumps correctly to the beginning of song,
starts playing, then it mutes for a few seconds and resumes playing
again. Clearly, there's still some problem but now it's not so serious.

Observe how there is no bounding box around this error dialog that
Nautilus creates when I attempt to unmount a volume that I don't have
rights to. No other Gnome app I've seen creates the bounding box
visible in the previous attachment.

I am running Feisty up to date and cannot log back in after locking the
screen, although logging in as a new user works. Killing gnome-
screensaver works as a work-around.
/var/log/auth.log says:
