Interesting result: I've built the mixer applet from source and
installed it and can't reproduce the random mute indicator.
I've compared the build logs from buildd and my local build and can't

John, which versions did you mean with latest versions in the upstream
bug comment? libnotify 0.4.4 and notification-daemon 0.3.7 changelogs
(neither upstream nor Ubuntu) don't indicate a fix, and I can't see
anything relevant in the trunk revision logs either.

I think my problem is located in the fact that there I have no real
ACPI-support for my Acer-model. The brightness control via the hotkeys
seems to be done by the BIOS not by any ACPI-event. Even the available
acer-acpi module doesn't support my Travelmate C200 series notebook. I
hardly have

started getting '*' in the password mask too.
