I have the same problem I believe. The workspace panel applet switches
to a different set of workspaces from the ones the Compiz hotkeys move
to.
I was able to isolate the configuration files that are causing this down
to something in ~/.gconf. Not sure which parameter is the bad one yet.

The problem is not evolution, it is Google Mail which is not implementing the
IMAP protocol correctly.

inotifywatch in ~/.evolution shows activity in mail/views:
