I re-opened this bug thread because I have the exact same problem. I use
Ubuntu Gutsy, and evolution-data-server 1.12.1-0ubuntu1. I'm attaching a
valgrind report, I got using this command:
evolution --force-shutdown && G_SLICE=always-malloc G_DEBUG=gc-friendly

It's a PNG image, incorrectly named. When renamed to "tux", and then
back to "tux.jpg" again, eog will open it without complaining. I'll
search for the possible reasons of this behaviour in the upstream bug
tracker and elsewhere. This probably qualifies as a duplicate of bug
#172416.

I first wanted to say that I've also seen that behaviour.
Now, I'd also like to point out that the second part of your bug isn't
strictly true. I believe that the default settings blank out the screen
after a certain amount of time (I think it's either 30 minutes or an
hour), so after that time th

I installed this package:
# apt-show-versions libgtk2.0-0
libgtk2.0-0/unknown uptodate 2.12.2-1
Unfortunately, this does not solve the problem. I get the same crash, with the
same backtrace.
Using my custom-compiled libgtk 2.12.2 still works.
