Interesting. Looks like upgrading my device to v1.0.4 (which upped Samba
3.0.24) did the trick. Now works as expected, dragging from window to
desktop copies the files no problem. Maybe a Samba 2 vs Samba 3 problem.
Anyway, looks "fixed" to me. :)

The device is a little NS box, the D-Link DS-323. Connecting via

I just noticed a funny thing: when I boot into Ubuntu without Compiz
enabled, I have the scaled black pictures.
But when I start Compiz, the issue is gone. And if I stop Compiz again,
the issue is not coming back.

The dimming problem doesn't occur if 'Dim display when idle' option is
deselected (along with the 'Reduce backlight brightness' setting). Would
suggest power manager is watching for activity but not seeing any for
some reason ??
