I have fixed the problem on my system. Here's what I think caused it:
I had upgraded from Hardy using update-manager -e (which, maybe, I
should have mentioned in the original bug report) and apparently was
left with some cruft that caused Compiz to misbehave. After completely

The hibernate icon also seems a bit out of place... I wonder why this
dialog isn't using the theme icons. For instance, human-icon-theme
installs:

Just done todays update of Alpha 5 and the bug occured after login.

search for all instances of 'gconfd-2' . Seems that it is pretty common
for it to hang around upon normal exit of an LTSP TC session, which
package gnome-watchdog sees and forcefully kills to keep stale
processes to a minimum.

I tried the commit/patch mentioned in the cairo bug report and it does
indeed fix the problem. Please consider adding that patch to the
intrepid cairo package, or, if that's too risky, suppressing svg
thumbnails as I mentioned above.
