Thank you for the answer.
Eventually I found out, that the error message was correct. The database
simply was corrupt, perhaps as a result of an update where the backup was
from Ubuntu 7,10 to Ubuntu 8.04. I simply erased the old database from
~/.gnome2/f-spot, and then restarted f-spot.
I was actually about to try disabling animations...but now that AusIV
already did, I don't want to lose my panels. =p

Same problem here. Though, after reading through the comments I want to
say that resizing the window does cause evince to render the PDF.
I have found that this happens more often than not where you open a PDF
that has not been opened since the last session/reboot.

When the menu programming tab under the gnome desktop is set to only
display Python (v. 2.5) and Umbrello, I get a blank box the size of two
items instead of a box containing the programs. Any other combination
has not wielded a problem

Trying to get around the delay, I went in to gconf-editor and turned off
animations. The panel started appearing in the upper left corner,
despite the drawer icon being in the lower right corner. When I re-
checked "enable animations", the panel stopped appearing all together.

Both eog and gthumb load the problem image without any warning or
error messages.
I copied the image to /tmp/foo and then imported it into f-spot, while
running it in debug mode as you suggested. Again I got the out of
memory error.
The debug output is attached.
