I hate to pass the buck here, but it seems like this is unlikely to be a GPM
bug. The function gpm_button_filter_x_events is set up as a callback from X
sending an event. Since it is getting the keypress in that case, I would have
to believe that X is continuing to send it. Either that or GD

I triggered the event by attempting to open a media file in Totem, an
.avi file to be specific. I had done so previously under Intrepid

In that case you should expect that running as root would allow it to
work, but you reported it is not. If both ieee1394 and firewire
subsystems are enabled in the kernel, then it may create this problem:

Same here in Hardy on the MSI Wind. If I leave the laptop for a few
minutes, the screen darkens, but when the laptop is reactivated, the
screen reverts to maximum brightness ignoring the settings it previously
had.
