I installed Ubuntu Intrepid Beta from CD (fresh install) with the existing
/home/ folder/drive. This cured the problem. I haven't installed KDE at the
moment.
Anyway, I still think something was wrong with some conflicting settings. At

I don't think this bug is reproducable on a new install.
I added KDE, then upgraded from 8.04 (Hardy) to 8.10 (Intrepid) Alpha 6 and
after one or two daily system upgrades the error occurred. I think it's a
settings problem.
The error occurs likewise in GNOME as in KDE session.

Using the [Fn + Up] and [Fn + Dn] keystrokes changes the brightness in

I quickly read the various comments. And here are my €0.02.
It's not clear to me whether you guys want to migrate panels from old
users to the new config or not. If you do, you'll have to either patch
the panel for the next 2-3 years (until next LTS, I guess?), or provide
a small migration helper
I tried to reproduce this, but it works for me on a pre-Intrepid system. I'm
going to mark this fix-released, rather than invalid, on the assumption that
there was something going on. If anyone can reproduce this, or knows exactly
what the submitter meant by

Sorry for subscribing you, but I didn't know if you'd see followup

I am indeed using Gnome, but my /var/crash/ directory is empty, both
when I view it in nautilus as well as cd'ing to it and 'ls -la'ing.
