This affects me too (8.10, thinkpad x60) and has been a pain for a long
time now (certainly was present in Hardy, can't remember back to Gutsy).
Experimentation shows two distinct problems.
a) "on battery power" -> "reduce backlight brightness" When selected
this sets the normal brightness to 50%
I am adding some debug code to my copy of trunk to see if I can zero in

kernel 2.6.28-4 hangs initializing desktop while 2.6.27-7 runs O.K. in dual
boot.
2.6.28-4 was installed by upgrade, fails. Daily build 20081229 also fails,
same way.

I've noticed in the last few days that every time I insert a CD/DVD or a
USB-thumbdrive/harddrive into my computer that Nautilus crashes and
restarts.
Here's the dmesg-output from the moment after I plug in my USB-

helps to just attach a patch from upstream.
A debdiff or attaching the upstream patch (or a pointer to it) in
launchpad makes it easier for us to review and integrate changes, and
