my solution: i did edit /etc/apt sources.list and changed 'hoary' to

Well, I'm not sure how to go about reproducing this problem. It is a
constantly problem for me. If you could give me suggestions I'd be more

As for alsamixer, it's behavior is the exact same. However, using
alsamixer I was able to determine that the compression isn't
