Working again on a clean system, there are actually two issues on Karmic.
First: Our usual libxklavier bug when built with Xinput support (that I didn't
see at first as I was running a patched version)

This bug is not yet fixed: The setting System > Preferences > Power
Management > On AC Power > (Actions) > When laptop lid is closed:=Blank
screen is still at fault. The screen will not light up when opening the
lid, even after a key is pressed.

i have just found that a reboot has corrected the sound in that when i closed
the application. the reboot took a time to progress. i have just tried it and
it works ok now.
ps i do not have totem installed.

I am having the same issue... Can't even use Karmic for internet..
insane slow speeds.. Running Alpha 6 fresh cop, dell e1705, wired
connection & wireless have same problem.. Tried disabling ipv6 but it
wont let me... tried blacklisting it but nothing happens.. hmmm.. help
please..
