I feel Steve Langasek's opinion makes sense (post #54). GDM should not
exit with non zero stauts when it is disabled. If it exits with 0 then
failsafe-x will not start and we won't have issue with KDM.

plugging in the camera, it is automounted twice, then gThumb is opened

Well the problem is a have 4 gigs of memory, and as you can see in my
screenshot my system has never used since i built it any swap memory.
The second point is that nautilus is using 2.2 gigs of memory: isn't
that unusual that with only one nautilus window opened it is using so
much memory? and the
