It seems to be a problem with USB and Lucid but not USB and Karmic.

pcspkr module loaded (lsmod shows it), most of the time there's no beep,

Workaround - create blank files on the removable drive named
".Trash-1000", ".Trash-1001", and so on as needed. Since it cant create
a folder because a file already exists with the same name, it asks if it
can permanently delete. At least this worked for me with a FAT32 SD
card.

Be careful : with the new update of udisks version 1.0.1-1ubuntu it is
impossible to read an internal or usb floppy. The solution is to
downgrade udisks to 1.0.1-build1 as I explain here in detail :
