sudo service acpi-support stop
And voila I have my speed back. I can even start it again in battery
mode and the speed is still good. So it seems that a stop of acpi-
support solves the issue and a new start doesn't harm the speed anymore.

Actually ... it is useful to display the whole tab as well as a +, as
you can then easily drag it into another window.
At the moment if I want to drag it to another window I have to create
another temporary tab and drag the first one.

No, because there still should be a convenient way to create a tab.
Ideally if there is a + button, when there is only one tab it should be
on the same line as the menu bar to not take up any more vertical space.
