Thanks everyone, i've fixed my backlight problem with following steps:
1) set options video brightness_switch_enabled=0
to /etc/modprobe.d/video.conf
2) compile and install patched gnome-power-manager
Hope this changes will go to upstream. The only minor problem is that
gnome-power-manager is not
I've noticed this problem in 10.04 and 10.10. Screenshot attached as
example.
I can cause the problem to recur by following these steps:
1) Open a movie
2) Change to fullscreen
3) Open volume slider
4) Close the volume slider (by clicking somewhere else)
5) Open the volume slider

telepathy-gabble from natty, it is version 0.11.0-1
...so, XMPP running again, leaves only QQ, MSN and ICQ broken...

Paul, I also had this problem about large CPU spikes.
It's a known nvidia bug with the nvidia drivers found with the "Additional
Drivers" application in Ubuntu.
It can be fixed up by downloading the latest nvidia driver from nvidia's
website and installing that. :)

This is getting worst. I am on a netbook, 1024x600, and now even mail is
difficult to read. If I switch from the main view to the calendar view,
the main windows grows in vertical, and after that I can't reduce it
back to fit in the 600-panel height of the screen. Not even to the full
600 pixels.

I had this problem in ubuntu 10.04 and have it still. mkv files will run
smoothly for anything from one minute to half an hour or even more. Then
it starts to get choppy but the audio is file. Restarting totem fixes
the problem and I can even play the parts of the mkv file which were
choppy before

When running gnome-volume-control-applet an applet appears that works
correctly. Why not build on that? Having the volume control in the
notification area is illogical and impractical anyways.

Thank you so very much , for you taking the time and trouble to reply to my
problem, when you are an old buffer like me, just beginning to start on
computing , i need all the help i can get A friend of mine , whom
started out using Dos 4 , spent a lot of time on that , as he is retired
also ,
Check the notes, and it will explain the fix, it's actually not a bug,
but a change in behaviour, took me a while to get to the bottom of it.

When i select an unread message, i siew it on the preview pane, and decide to
forward it.
After the message is forwarded the message should be marked as read.
It works for replied messageds but not for forwarded ones.

Finally this issue is fixed :)
I combined Paul and Miklos's findings into a script (attached), which
should (YMMV) install the fix automatically on ubuntu 10.10.
Usage:
sudo sh fix_java_compiz.sh
