Hmm, ok, could you try the following command?
gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/thumbnailers > thumbnailers.txt
This generates the file thumbnailers.txt in the current directory, could you
attach this to the bug report?
When you get the crash, are there any error messages in the file
~/.xsession-err

On further investigation, I think there are some packaging issues around
"Assistive Tools" that prevent this topic from being dislayed localized
in Maverick.
In short, I think the Ubuntu gnome language packs do not install the
localized Assistive Tools content, which is a gnome-user-gu
Unfortunately, I am not sure which packgace is used to show xcf files.
Here is the output of the command you mentioned.

an accent on Nautilius but it didn't work. I used the "cadaver" command
to access it and it worked fine.
