I too am seeing this bug. I noticed that I had the Ubuntu One
application open when it was going crazy. I closed that app and killed
the process(not sure if I really needed to do that) and the symptoms

If one was to take a non playable file, record it thru vlc it will then get a
thumbnail & be playable
Vlc doesn't re-encode in record mode but does write a new head
The reason it was doing that was because it was loading a schema from
another directory which must have been forgotten about during the upgrade
process. I deleted it and I haven't had a problem since.
