Using 12.10 on an older Toshiba, I can confirm this bug and lack of
workaround. The only workaround I have discovered is to decrease the
resolution of one or both displays by trial and error so that their
total combined width does not exceed the graphics card's capabilities.

Gnome 3.x. So many configuration options are hidden.
If you can't find what you need in gnome-control-center then open a terminal
and run "synclient" which will show you many settings for touchpads at least.

I had the same issue, and I figured out how to do change the handler
(Ubuntu 12.10).
Edit
/usr/share/dbus-1/services/org.freedesktop.Telepathy.Client.KTp.TextUi.service
to comment out (or remove) the link to ktp-text-ui and use Empathy
instead.
In the end, the service file will look like thi

When I switch viewport (virtual desktop) and I've got a focussed or
unfocussed gnome-terminal open, it (most of the times but not always)
looses the blinking cursor.
When I've on the shell, then it's lost, when I'm on Vim I need to move
and exit insert mode to see the cursor
Followup: from what I've gathered, this is not really a totem bug, but
rather one in gstreamer itself.
