Am for the moment marking above mentioned bug as dupe here based on a rebuild
of current eglibc source
(reverted debian local-pthread_cond_wait patches, applied upstream diff, ect.)
With the redone libc6 package installed don't see any hangs in totem nor system
hangs when closing windows in gnom
Right now I just have one 2mb image (a photo taken with an iphone 4s)
opened and eog is taking 92mb of ram! That is outrageous and should be
addressed.

Set a proxy (I chose 'goats' for the http bit, and 8080 as the port.
Click on 'apply system wide'.
Note that /etc/environment contains 'http_proxy="http://goats:8080";'

Totem (and GNOME in general) is moving in the direction of having less
settings. Totem 3.6.x doesn't even have the Audio output setting. It
simply uses the default gstreamer sink, which has to be changed through

12.10. Top and left margins are affected. A workaround is to print to a
.ps file then print from that file. However a better solution is to use
a Generic PCL6 Driver.
