Apologies, I believe I have found a solution.
I have 13.04 and loaded up the gnome interface. Since then i've received

This bug is occurring to me still in Ubuntu 13.04, the fix released in
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=627262 might not be affecting
Unity interface so it is still affecting most Ubuntu users.
