The above worked until a reboot. After the reboot even restarting the
ubuntu-location-service did not consistently help. After several
attempts I got the location detection working again but still got the
Timeout was reached: No space left on device warning once it was
working.

Steps to (re)produce the bug:
1) import images without copying - thumbnails and images are displayed
correctly, as per the orientation tag
2) double click on a vertical (i.e. taken in portrait mode) photo
3) right click - open with external editor (gimp)

This sounds very similar a bug that was fixed some time ago (I can't find the
bug report now). I'd recommend upgrading to a more recent version of shotwell
(I think the ubuntu repos should have 18.1?) and seeing if that fixes the issue.

I frequently run into this problem whenever I want to rename a bookmark
into name@server. As soon as I type the @ symbol on a German
keyboard, that is pressing AltGr + Q, the focus gets lost and the
renaming stops.
The two workarounds are:
1.) copy the @-symbol from somewhere else by Ctrl+C and
I don't have cairo-dock install.
