WORKAROUND IDENTIFIED.
PROBABLE SOURCE OF BUG IDENTIFIED.
Using Unity Tweak, I changed the Theme from High Contrast to
Ambience. Missing menus are now visible. Change back to Ambience and
bug recurs.
The cause of this bug seems to be related to the High Contrast Theme.
This workaround also
That is what happen when you add/mix versions (saucy is dead now) with
non-trusted sources (non ubuntu).
As your system is set to 'utopic', purge everything else and stay with the
defaults ubuntu repositories.

While it isn't completely clear what the correct way to display images
is, if eog is in fact currently displaying them correctly it would help
to have an option to display them 'literally'. It doesn't seem like
there is any way to do this. Exact comparisons are helpful to diagnose
