I had the same problem using "sudo gedit .bash_history" I just changed
the argument to "sudo -H gedit .bash_history &>/dev/null" no more
problems.

ok, obviously a wrong guess on my side. I tried copying from and to xfs
and jfs without problems, and signs of paralysis with btrfs coming in.
But if you experience sluggishness without btrfs I also doubt it's
related to that.

ogra's point, I use encrypted lvm and was able to enter a password and
