I have restored my clonezilla backup of 18.04 as I also have an issue
with deja-dup not working after the upgrade (reported as a separate
bug). I needed to get back to work urgently and didn't have time to try
your suggestion.
As a side, I see that icons are missing for certain locales, could
I have never changed the icon theme, so whatever the ubuntu mate default
is.

I just did another update with headers (actually 5.4.0-58-generic).
I put back notifications from settings before rebooting, and it seems to
working perfectly now.

include the 'journalctl -b 0' log after triggering the issue. Nautilus
doesn't handle the desktop anymore so reassigning to gnome-shell which
