fwiw, I "solved" (sic) this by changing the os to Pop!_OS. Pop! has solved
many other issues with other apps.

Thank you for taking the time to report this crash and helping to make
this software better. This particular crash has already been reported
and is a duplicate of bug #1966435, so is being marked as such.
In mutter 43 (Ubuntu 22.10) the workaround has changed to:

Hello,
Here is the output of gdb gnome-control-center.
After clicking on the button to access keyboard shortcut, gnome-control-
center didn't close but triggered the 'not responding' window, and I
clicked 'close' before continuing with the 'backtrace full' gdb command.

Possibly the 20.04.4 live system is also involved, because to my
knowledge setting a proxy via Settings/Network does not normally make
any changes to /etc/apt/apt.conf (i.e. you are not prompted for a sudo
password after setting a manual proxy in Settings/Network).
So I'm guessing the 20.04.4
Thank you Nick. Yes Settings/Network is where we configured the [squid]

I don't believe this is related to any ubuntu-release-upgrader logic. I

I tried disabling the system extensions and logging in again, which did

caused the shell to crash. I can reliably reproduce this, the

This seems to (still) be the most common gnome-shell crash in jammy.
It's hard to confirm since a bug in errors.ubuntu.com puts all assertion
failures in the same bucket, but for months most of them have been this
