Hugh, so you can reproduce it without a monitor attached?
Please remember to try disabling the Ubuntu Dock extension, like with:
gnome-extensions disable ubuntu-d...@ubuntu.com
Then log in again and retest.

issue,
and as #7, there is no nvidia GFX on XPS series,
and seems install thunderbolt-tools can WA this issue, but I think it's because
it installed it's own udev rule, so the rules are different

I have deleted ~/.config/monitors.xml, then rebooted and logged in
again.
The file is not recreated automatically, it seems? The new default
display configuration for Gnome is now already 4K@60 Hz. I have waited
once, until the displays go into suspend, then resumed, and the problem
appeared immed

I can reproduce it with XPS 9340, which is Intel only machine. It only
happens on authorizing multiple devices.
I'll try attach a thunderbolt storage to Dell thunderbolt Dock and plug
the Dock into the DUT to see if I can reproduce it.

It occurred today, the GDM screen also appears very slow.
Compressed all the files in a zip file as i could not figure attaching multiple
files at one go with launchpad.
Note: This occurred with the x11 session as i have not yet enabled the

My setup is a little different so I'm struggling to reproduce exactly
the same issue.
On my machine I do see nouveau crash in the kernel if I plug in a
Thunderbolt eGPU with a monitor attached. That freezes the shell, but
may not be the same freeze as yours. I also wonder if a monitor is
relevant
