One thing I noticed is that Debian used 0600 instead of 0666 here:
https://salsa.debian.org/systemd-team/systemd/-/commit/8ca0c4921b
Using 0666 may be enough to fix this issue and it could be why distros
other than Debian or Ubuntu didn't seem to have a problem here.

gnome-shell crashed with SIGSEGV in
meta_kms_cursor_manager_
I enabled proposed but 46.2-1ubuntu0.24.04.7 won't install, so I used
"sudo apt install mutter=46.2-1ubuntu0.24.04.7" to force mutter to
upgrade to 0.24.04.7.
However, the issue remains, i.e. selecting text in firefox and pasting
to terminal won't work.

it stays enough time to allow to login but then the session crashes
anyway
Disabling wayland in /etc/gdm3/custom.conf solves the issue

What I could gather is that gsd-power is crashing in the log-in screen,
not in the logged-in user session.
Unfortunately the logs are not showing at which point it is crashing.
Instead, they show upower normally running:

Bug 2050865 is the only unresolved hotplugging crash I can find in
24.04. Apparently that one can still happen with extensions, but not
without extensions.
