I already removed all traces of extensions and logged in again, it still
occurs.
After using the machine for several hours today I am now 100% certain
the mechanism is Firefox browsing with hardware acceleration disabled,
described above (#2).

Looks like it's a laptop and the numlock state is on. For some laptops
that changes the behaviour for a region of the keyboard (it sounds like
the key you're using is mapped to Home at the time). Try turning numlock
off.

I wonder if it's possible to start mutter/gnome-shell from a state where
it can't get DRM mastership and have it freeze waiting for the right
events. It stands to reason it should do that because it's analogous to
running headless which is supported.

yet another stats (uptime 3 days), gnome-shell eats up to 95% (1 full CPU core)
the system starts to work really slow! eg browser pages loads slowly, etc

I have tried changing the columns and rows in profile preferences but
selecting more than 36 rows makes terminal to start in fullscreen mode!
