It does happen on 32bit systems. I encountered the bug a while ago:

Sorry for the double post - seems, i cant edit my former post.
Error happend on my system several times, after i have installed KDE-desktop
- using synaptic.
I was still able to logon to gnome - yet it was partly unusable.

3. As i missed several features - I realised there is a spezial meta-package
Kubuntu-desktop - i installed this package.
4. I chose gdm as the default manager
