I think, it is better to do this automatically whenever there's an error
after upgrade:
$ dconf reset -f /org/gnome/desktop/
Rather than a segfault & error. Better a slight lost of personality
rather than an unusable desktop.

kernel v3.14 and later. Since kernel v4.4 HWE is available for Ubuntu

never touched that file myself (at least not intentionally). I had

You might have "Show hidden and backup files" setting checked in your
Preferences. I had this setting checked and nautilus was showing hidden
files persistently between reboots. Uncheck this setting and see if you
are still facing the problem.
