I have the same issue, plus I couldn't share resource between the VMWare
and Windows. I had to update vmware-tools-desktop. The rendering did not
fix though.

Changing the values for gnome power manager didn't really solve the
problem , as I had mentioned before. I'm now using Icewm , without
gnome-power-manager and the problem with the screen brightness still
exists. I suppose this is a problem with acpi , rather than with gnome-
power-manager.

I too Am Facing the same problem in Fiesty fawn when i login as root(i have
enabled root login).
I have installed compiz fusion and starterd noticing this problem after using
the following commands:
apt-get update
apt-get install emerald
then, after pressing(Alt+f2), typing 'emerald --replace &
I understand that. Nonetheless, I can only reproduce it without the dbg
symbols. Like I said before, it only happens the first time. Once I restart
the gnome-panel during the same session, I don't see the error again. Sorry
I can't be of more help than that.
