Thanks @vanvugt, so there are 3 UI ways of hiding the desktop icons, but
only one works:
$ gnome-shell-extension-prefs
... then switch off the desktop-icons extension.
(Nevermind that gnome tweaks, under "Extensions", listed the desktop-
icons gnome shell extension as disabled.)

1. Open evince
2. Go to File/Open and load a pdf file. Opens instantly. Leave it open.
3. Go again to File/Open and try to open the same pdf fil
How is this bug "invalid"? It's real and in need of fixing.
I would appreciate an explanation. If this bug is invalid, what other
bug entry is taking care of the problem?

1 - Open a java application like ImageJ (it's in the repos) with java 1.6.0
2 - within it, open a modal dialog, like any plugin that emits a GenericDialog
3 - Switch to another desktop. When returning, the applicat
/var/crash does not contain any crash file.
Your 'if' failed: despite gnome-desktop being installed, I am not using it.
Nautilus is launched with the following command:
$ nautilus .
It then sets a desktop which is simply another X window.
When changing the X background with feh, nautilus crashes.

Thank you! Finally! I knew it had to be some silly setting -dapper to edgy had
the same problem with gtk2 apps: some silly setting.
So I moved .gnomerc to the trash and finally my gnome desktop is working
properly.
The file ,gnomerc contained a dozen white lines and this one line:
export WINDOW
Yes: in the past I installed, used for a week or so, and then uninstalled with
--purge) beryl and Xgl.
I have tried to move .dmrc elsewhere to no avail. On relogin to a gnome
session, a new .dmrc gets created with a 'default' instead of 'gnome'
session.

My system has changed so much, it's hard to tell anymore. I'm runny edgy
and so far so good. Definitely dragging a folder to the trash from the
master HD is no problem. Can't test with slave drive because I don't
have it anymore. USB pens seem to work just fine with trashing folders.

Fixed perhaps but not totally. Ubuntu failed to enter suspended mode when run
out of battery and crashed. On reboot, bonobo would refuse to work, printing in
a dialog the same error message as above, and asking to remove applets that
"don't work".

powerpc dapper installation. After using evolution for 2 days, now it
