You don't have to copy the XML generated by shotwell to gnome-
background-properties. You have to create a different XML (I named it
wallpaper.xml) with this code that points to the XML from shotwell:

/home//.local/share/shotwell/wallpaper/wall
I have this exact issue, after an update around the same date.
I can see the images are copied to
/home//.local/share/shotwell/wallpaper/ and the XML is created with
correct paths but that's it.
The wallpaper is not changed nor is the slideshow added to the list of
wallpapers.
There's no .local
I no longer get crashes when updating (for the last 2 days it works) but
I still cannot send bug reports when using `ubuntu-bug`. When I click
Send I still see an error dialog with title `gnome-shell` and something
about gnome older versions of some packages (accountsservice,
bind9-host, bind9-libs

Everything crashes all of a sudden and it goes back to the login screen. I
login but it freezes and I have to force a restart.
Don't know what happens, might be SSD related or GNOME 41 could be the culprit.
