When working on an external hard drive, viewing the hidden folders I
highlighted .trashes100 and pressed the delete key on the keyboard, this
caused what I assume nautilus to try to trash the trash, ultimately
leading to a crash.

Did you ignore SSL certificate errors in the advanced settings?
(from the contact list) Edit Account Select your GTalk account
Drop down Advanced and tick Ignore SSL certificate errors
It should stop bothering you now.
