I see this issue, too (12.04.4 and Lenovo T420). After the gnome-
settings update the volume keys stopped working. The logs show no
warning and error messages... I will try if a rollback to 6.4 will help.

If you work in german (actually German Swiss) in planner, you can not
distinguish betwenn Duration and Work. Both is translated with "Dauer".
Actually the distinguish of Work and Duration is essential, to use
planner ! Workaround: use English vers
Actually I did'nt know about this directory beeing used for special purposes. I
had a subdirectory in ~/Templates, where I stored original jpg's used for
presentation templates etc.
