The above xrandr output is while running a gnome session; see below for
the same while gdm shows its login screen.

I second the race condition, since the problem doesn't always appear.
Sometimes after booting (minority of cases), the user list is shown
normally.
P.S.: Workaround: No need to install xdm. Just log into a VT and enter
"startx".

When did Ubuntu change this? I remember for sure that a few releases
ago, turning off the backlight using the notebook's "blank screen" or
"lock screen" (you know, the screen icon with the X ;) ) button worked.
After one upgrade it didn't anymore. I didn't research the matter enough
back then, but

I know have enabled cups administration via web interface (used root
account to authenticate), and now *it works*. I suppose it is a real
gnome-cups-manager problem. The changes, however, show up in gnome-cups-
manager now. It seems the gnome tool only can't write settings, but can
read them.
