Silvan, that worked perfectly for me. One reboot and now I'm back in
action and can change the brightness without a drama. Thanks a lot!
@Sylvain, try changing the file exactly as silvan describes, (ie, adding
the string to the existing line) as this is what worked for me.

Good decision, fglrx consistently crashed my x-server in Alpha and Beta.
I was thinking the same thing as you, so I turned it back on to test the
brightness issue. (While fglrx doesnt crash the x-server anymore, it's
still got problems, I'm going to stick with the free one for now.)
