The problem I think is with this line in /etc/skel/.bashrc
case "$TERM" in

Which I believe makes this a bug in bash, I managed to produce a fix:

DNS entry exists and ftp command line to www.people.ex.ac.uk works fine
as does epiphany and firefox.
