Yup I'll second that, it seems to do "ok" under Unity with the global
menu. but not under Gnome shell or Gnome2.3 with out a global menu.
I hope things can be re-done to have the window automatically resize as
the status bar and toolbar are enabled or disabled, and when switching
between images u
P.S. this 1 to 2 pixel black bar goes away by very carefully resizing
the window. I have never owned a Apple Mac, and don't ever plan to. But
certain details of their design a very much admire and think look very
gorgeous.

I think its possibly the same bug, the other one is more technical bout
the reason it happens.
But even when the tool bar and the status bar are turned off and the a
Global menu is used making nothing but the title bar show, there will
still be a one or 2 pixel wide bar on either left or right si

No matter what when opening an image, there are always the ugly black
bars on both sides of any image. Disabling both the status bar and
toolbar helps a little, and using a "global menu" makes it ALOT better.
