Same problem here with lucid. On first opening any pdf, evince shows a
side pane with thumbnails and occupies a very small area of the screen.
If I close the side pane, then resize evince to something readable on my
monitor, then close evince, subsequent opening of ***the same*** pdf

Same problem here, nautilus treats every file type as a text file.
But, it's not only nautilus is at fault. Using a terminal to open a pdf
file with evince gives the error message:
File type plain text document (text/plain) is not supported.
However, using eog from a terminal to open a png file
Same bug in my case, but different solution.
The bug appeared when I used "su root" in a terminal, then tried the
upgrade using apt-get, synaptic, or dpkg.
However, when I used "sudo dpkg" etc from a user terminal, the
installation finished correctly. I didn't need to make any changes to

Same configuration, same problem when using libpoppler5 0.11.2-0ubuntu1.
Downgrading to libpoppler5_0.11.0-0ubuntu4 fixed it.

Confirmed using gnome-settings-daemon 2.27.4-0ubuntu1 on a 64bit quad-
core system without pulseaudio. Killing gnome-settings-daemon fixes the
problem, but of course then I only get the standard desktop decorations.

OK, on further investigation the problem was in shared-mime-info, not
evince, and the .local/share directory contents were causing things to
go wrong.
Just deleting this directory fixed the problem.

unhandled file type -
The problem is with all pdf files. They also opened normally in xpdf
and plain gs. After creating a new user and changing the ownership of
the files I was also able to open them successfully in evince. Looks
like the problem is in my setup, not evince itself. Any suggestions?
