What appears to be suspicious is that rb is using /dev/dsp, which is
ALSA's OSS emulation device. By default Dapper uses ALSA (not OSS or

After testing a Flight 5 live cd (i386), simply lowering the -as
parameter in /etc/esound/esd.conf will alleviate the symptom of the

After installing the 'mpg321' package from universe, please test:
$ mpg321 -s foo.mp3 |aplay -fcd
(substitute "foo.mp3" as appropriate) and report whether it produces
