Steve, I originally opened this bug, and then realized my main problem
was failure to properly detect my monitor: bug 958439. You may want to
look in that direction. Monitors *should* be communicating their
capabilities to the computer, and at that point it should be easy for
the OS to determine

Looks like the problem is automatic monitor detection, not inability to
manually configure refresh rate. Oneric does fine with auto-detection.
It detects my monitor as a 'Viewsonic Corporation 20"'. Precise doesn't
detect it. It's a Viewsonic G220fb.

My home directory wasn't writable. I tried booting, logging into gdm,
and it gave me a bunch of weird errors. Something about not being able
to copy .ICE-something. Then I realized my home directory didn't have
the right ownership.
Before all that
I am also seeing this on Karmic.
I also think gconf should not allow another buggy program to use up the
CPU. It really needs to throw a user-visible error stating what the
problem is, and throttle the other buggy program.
Ah, I believe metacity didn't come up as expected this boot, and I
starte
I agree that empathy should not be the default chat client until this
issue is resolved, and that it should be switched to pidgin, as it has
been in previous releases.

I'm getting this too. My nvidia driver failed to load, my fault, but
the failure mode is terrible.
Previous releases would fall back to a low resolution driver / X server,
probably using vesa, and then ask you if you wanted to reconfigure your
video. And if you said no it would let you just use
