I broke out xscope to see if I could see anything (not that I'm too familiar
with X protocol - it's been a while)
So I had another machine acting as a terminal to control xscope and ran gedit
--sync, I breakpointed on ChangeWindowAttribute and clicked the mouse on the

which uses % as the default prompt rather than $ used by bash or sh.
I suspect you probably did this by the command:
csh -s /bin/csh
