I followed the instructions for strace, and was able to reproduce the
problem while strace was running.
The log file it created, though was 31.2 MB in size, though. While it

I found that designer-qt4 causes the same problem consistently when
starting up, so I was able to get a backtrace of gnome-panel. I'd like
to re-open this report.
