Thanks for going after this problem, all! However, I'm not clear on
something. In my case, I like to save a "standard" session that starts
up every time, not the latest session. With that in mind, would it be
possible to set the environment variable, close the session (in correct
form), re-open it,

I think I answered my own question. So now this is a question (and if it
can be obliterated, great!)

Same result with a new clean install + gnome3. This does not show up on
either arch linux or fedora, so at this point it's unique to ubuntu as
far as I can tell.

Public bug reported:
When I set the above pref "Show menubar by default in new terminals" to
"off" by unchecking, newly created terminal windows still include the
menubar. Even more curious, in order to make it go away, I have to click
"Show menu" in the "View" menu, which will then show a checkma
Not sure I follow the sense of this change. First, the problem is
specific to only Unity and its fallback mode. KDE, XFCE, etc are not
affected.
Second, it was my understanding that Ubuntu-classic is a subset of Unity
(the fallback 2d mode). Is that incorrect?
On the other hand, recent moves (wis
I think you've got it about right, though I interpret the discussion as
"if someone finds a way to do it maybe we will put it in." On the other
hand, it looks like it's a good thing somebody submitted a bug, since it
appears the various folks in that discussion think it would be too much

No, I can't! I was primarily interested in Unity, but it's very
interesting to see the pref gone from Gnome 2 also. I hadn't previously
tried starting classic -- at least on my setup, it does a pretty good
job of matching things up. Which means unfortunately they both fail in
the same way.

When I set up gnome-terminal in autostart, it does appear at the

I'm also having the same problem, but it's an intel system (so it's not
an AMD thing). Using x4500 graphics subsystem. Also can confirm the
